Last of the May Show & Tell

Told you we had lots of wonderful Show & Tell this month! This is the last batch of pictures.

Doreen brought some interesting young ladies (pictured above).

And our three new members from Arkansas made the trip this month! (I was busy taking pictures and missed some of the story...I think this was made in a CIFI workshop???)

The face is beaded and she's clothed in acres of ribbons & fibers.

This is another beaded-face doll from one of our new members.

Again missed the story on these dolls, but they are very cool.

And finally - the door prize!

More May Show & Tell

As we said, there was lots of Show & Tell this month! Here are a few more wonderful dolls. And this isn't all! More to come.

Jack brought something he picked up on a recent trip. He didn't make them but they are hand made (Guatamala, I think?)

Carlyn modified a pattern we made a year or so ago in the workshop Angela Jarecki taught.

And Shirley brought some cute dolls she made from a Leslie Molen pattern.

May Show & Tell

It was a lively meeting with three new members to meet and lots of beautiful dolls to see! Let's start with Jean's workshop doll.

She decided not to use the "bird cage" and modified the doll by making a complete body, full length dress and high heeled shoes.

She is so lovely!

Her delicate hands, adorned with a bit of lace, carry Jean's trademark hand-beaded purse.

Shari brought some spring "Blossoms" (Barbara Schoenoff pattern).

Barbara made two more dolls from another favorite pattern.

TULSA DOLLING DAMES MAY 2, 2012 MEETING B-SEW INN

Attended: Connie, Jean, Shari, Jack, Lisa, Jayne, Doreen, Rena, Pam, Carlyn, Laura, Barbara K, Barbara D. Jennepher, Nark, Annie. New Members: Laura, welcomed & thanked, Jennepher, Nark & Annie for coming all the way from Arkansas to attend the meeting. Treasurer's statement: Financial report presented by Pam, Balance at end of April was $657.00 Old Business: June will be the quarterly meeting so we will meet Sat. June 2nd at the Hardesty Library at 1pm. Dues are due for the year and will be $24.00. Please make checks out to Tulsa Dolling Dames. Also, voting for officers during the meeting. Secretary position is open so if you want to put your name in please do. Any position is open but Laura & Pam are willing to continue with another year. June 8-9th is the Quilt Show at the Fairgrounds. Set up is Wed. the 6th. (Time pending. Laura will let us know.) Helpers needed!, Sitters Frid and Sat. 8th and 9th are needed as well. This is one of the major fund raisers for TDD with our pins and a raffle of Jean's doll. Laura will send an e-mail list for times you want to sign up to help. Please bring one or more dolls to add to the Hoffman trunk dolls that will be displayed. If you have any pins made for the fund raiser please bring them. Our July meeting will be held at B-Sew Inn on July 11th (second Wed. of the month) due to the 4th of July holiday on the 1st Wed. July 20th is when the Hoffman Callenge is due. Please see the rules on the Hoffman site. Storybook challenge is due the last of July. This is a club challenge. The storybook which was the inspiration for your doll must accompany the book. The dolls will be put into the Hardesty Library showcase for August 1st. You can give the dolls to Laura or someone else in the doll club anytime before Aug. 1st if you are unable to make it the last of July to the library. Teachers discussed: Leslie Molen, Stephanie Novaski and others. We would like to see other dolls by Sephanie as the teacher in October. Tulsa State Fair: Sept 27th-Oct. 7th is the Fair. Go to the TSF site and go to Competitive exhibits to register. We need everyone to enter, please, please, please. Our dolls are declining in numbers that are being entered and we would like the public to see what we do. Also, there is a crafters corner in the same building where we can demonstrate our art to the public by making dolls and showing how we do it. If you are interested in signing up a list will circulate for times. New Business: Discuss new things for next year. If you are interested in certain teachers let Laura know. Arley Berryhill was mentioned in the Spring. Discussion about having a teacher for a retreat next year so more people would attend and if we still want Western Hills (most people do like Western Hills still). Jack, Nark and others volunteered to check into any other suitable place in their areas. Discuss another club challenge. Think about it! Door Prize: Jayne made a 3 witches genie, which she enlarged and Lisa was the lucky winner. Very cute wall or Christmas tree doll. Show and Tell was lively and will be on the TDD blog. Welcome!

Welcome to our blog! We are a group of people who love to create beautiful, whimsical, personalities from fabric, fiber, found objects, sequins, jewels, and embellishments of all sorts. In addition, each of us explores other art mediums, such as quilting, beading, embroidery. Most of all, we love to get together and have fun -- while making art! New members are most welcome.

We meet the first Saturday of the month at Hardesty Library in Tulsa, OK. However, due to covid-19, we have switched to virtual meetings. Follow us on Facebook @TulsaDollArtists, for more information or email dollartists@gmail.com.

Scraps 'n Threads

Our monthly meetings are held the first Saturday of the month, 12:00 noon (previously at Hardesty Library, located just north of 91st St. off Memorial in Tulsa; meetins are now held online) We always have lots of fun, share good information, and have a great display of our members' creations. You're welcome to stop by & visit, but we hope you decide to stay and create with us!

How it All Began

A brief history of the Tulsa Dolling Dames begins with 3 people who met at an elinor peace bailey workshop in May of 1999, and decided to start a doll club. A very simple beginning, but it has turned into a delightful 10 years of fun, friendship, laughter and an on-going knowledge of the art of cloth doll making. To some, a cloth doll is a simple “rag” doll made of left overs, or a bright redhaired Raggedy Anne or even a Cabbage Patch Kid lookalike. But to a seamtress, several pieces of cloth can easily become an art doll.

Jean Martin, Rae Sook and Scampy Rainey started the club and spent the first few months meeting in the back room at the Quilter’s Nook shop, wondering how to ever get the word out about art dolls. Jean finally made a small poster showing pictures of cloth dolls and information about the club and hung it up by the front door of the shop for all to see. One day a visitor [Daria Cash] who had seen the sign, looked in and asked “Is this the doll club”? Well, yes it was! And so it began.

Through the years those few have turned into an active club with up to 30 members at times. Mostly local, northeastern Oklahoma, but has included members from Texas and Arkansas.

We have well-known teachers come for classes and have gone to many out of state classes. But the very first class was held in Jean’s sewing room with the original three members and two ladies from her Dallas club.....the teacher being Anne Marie Brombal. We went on to have Diane Little and Gladi Alred from Albuquerque at Jean's house, stopping on their way home from a doll conference in Kansas City. A few members attended, as well as two more ladies from Albq. and one from Florida, all on their way home. Quite a group, and the laughter never stopped. As our club grew, we had classes at the quilt shop, then the local sewing machine center, and now at the library. Our teachers have included Christine Shively, Mary Tressler, Barbara Willis, Adele Sciortino, Barbara Schoenoff, Patti Culea, Angela Jarecki, Cindee Moyer and Arley Berryhill to name a few.

But mostly we learn from each other, as our club has many talented members who are willing to share what they know. We’ve learned beading, embroidery, quilting, paper art, marionettes, polymer clay, and cloth-over face molds. Anything goes where art dolls are concerned.

Some of our local projects have included displays at the libraries, booths at the quilt shows, with the added attraction of a trunk full of the Hoffman dolls each time, also a newspaper article with pictures, exhibits at the state fair, as well as a Christmas tree decorated with many small cloth dolls and donated to one of our art museums, to be sold at their yearly Christmas tree exhibit. These have proven to be a good way to educate the public on what an art doll really is, as many people have never seen this type of doll made from cloth.

This is only a few of the many activities our club has taken part in, but it will give you an idea of how something small can turn into a wonderful, fun filled life, “playing with dolls”. ~Jean
