More February Show&Tell

Welcome to Part 2 of our February Show & Tell!

Barbara also did another "Anneal" doll. This was a fun doll to make and easy to see why we would want to do more than one.

So pretty in pink! She plans to add more Steampunk accessories. The month comes around so quickly, sometimes we don't get our dolls entirely finished by club day. (I still have to put shoes on my Anneal and make a base for my Circus Girl!)

Laurie is ready for the March Challenge, which was to make a doll based on a work of art. These will be on display at Hardesty Library in April, so you'll be seeing this beautiful, graceful lady again.

We were especially impressed with the shoes - Laurie designed the pattern herself!

We wrapped up the meeting with a wonderful program where Jayne demonstrated wigging techniques and materials.

So many ways to make hair and so many materials to make it with. Thank you so much, Jayne, for a very informative program!

February Show&Tell

We had a wonderful showing of dolls at this month's meeting!

Appropriately, the door prize (made by Pam, won by Jack) was in keeping with the Valentine spirit of the month!

Nark brought a beauty she made from an Arley Berryhill pattern.

We're excited about our April workshop which Arley will be teaching!

Colorful, simple and fun. She made this next simple confection from just board and a variety of fibers.

Sherry brought her interpretation of "Anneal" the doll Barbara Schoenoff taught at our 2012 spring workshop.

She is so LOVELY!

Sherry plans to embelish her ensemble with Steampunk accessories.

These unique heels make for fun shoes.

February Minutes

TULSA DOLLING DAMES

Minutes February 6, 2013

Attendees: Doreen, Pam, Shari, Jean, Laurie, Jack, Barbara K, Jayne, Shirley, Rena, Barbara D, Jennepher, Nark, Annie, Daria, Connie, Carlyn, Lisa, plus guests-2 moms and 7 children who saw our displays at the library.

Treasurer’s Report: We have $1,467.00 in our bank account.

Arley Berryhill’s class:

Tulakogee Lodge was cancelled, as there was no guarantee that all rooms would be on the first floor. We will try to stay there at a later date. Laurie has reserved the Maple room at Hardesty library for the two days of Arley’s class on Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20^th. Arley’s room in Tulsa will cost the club about $200 more. Supply lists will be sent to everyone who has fully paid for the class. Arley is sending the pattern to Laurie for distribution to all class members. There is pre-work for the class. The cost of this class is $100.00.

Hardesty Library display will be in April featuring our art challenge dolls. Bring them to the March 2 Saturday meeting at the library. You still have time to work on them before April. Everyone bring your wonderful art doll challenge doll to the library on April 1. Our two mothers and 7 children love our displays at the library. They are interested in making dolls so Laurie invited them to come to our meeting.

Our next Saturday day meeting will be June 1 at Connie’s house. We will pay our dues, and elect officers. Bring a potluck finger food dish to share. Our potluck will start at 12 noon. We will also have a fabric and embellishment swap so bring lots of goodies from your stash! This should be a lot of fun. Thanks, Connie, for the great idea!

Laurie will post a list of people, who have volunteered to furnish door prizes for the months ahead, on our blogspot. Please check it our so you will know which month you have signed up for.

Magical Art Doll Conference, October 10 – 13, 2013:

New information has been listed about classes and teachers on the MAD blogspot. Our teachers are Barbara Schoenoff, Jessica Alcosta Hamilton, and Linda Misa. Each teacher will teach a 2-day and 1 day class. Go to http://www.magicalartdolls.blogspot.com/ to check out their classes. The cost of the conference is $300, which includes the Thursday night "Meet and Greet" with finger food, and the banquet on Sunday night. Salesroom tables cost $15 for a 6-foot table in the sales room. The club will be selling pin dolls in the sales room. The silent auction proceeds will be donated to the Little LightHouse in Tulsa, which is a local charity, which helps children with special needs. The cost of the Wyndham hotel is $79 a night for a room. The Wyndham has recently been remodeled and is a beautiful hotel with all the amenities.

We will be constructing table favors for our March project. Members will need to bring card stock and scissors.

The door prize was made by Pam and was won by Jack. Pam made a wonderful Valentine doll sitting on a heart.

We had wonderful show and tell, and our guests really enjoyed seeing the dolls. Go to the our blogspot to see pictures (link below)

The program was presented by Jayne. She showed various methods and materials to make hair and wigs for dolls.

We enjoyed having our young guests at the meeting. Barbara K and Shari brought fabrics and embellishments to give away, and the children were excited to choose their own. We hope they come back again soon.

Welcome to our blog! We are a group of people who love to create beautiful, whimsical, personalities from fabric, fiber, found objects, sequins, jewels, and embellishments of all sorts. In addition, each of us explores other art mediums, such as quilting, beading, embroidery. Most of all, we love to get together and have fun -- while making art! New members are most welcome.

Scraps 'n Threads

Our monthly meetings are held the first Saturday of the month, 12:00 noon (previously at Hardesty Library, located just north of 91st St. off Memorial in Tulsa; meetins are now held online) We always have lots of fun, share good information, and have a great display of our members' creations. You're welcome to stop by & visit, but we hope you decide to stay and create with us!

How it All Began

A brief history of the Tulsa Dolling Dames begins with 3 people who met at an elinor peace bailey workshop in May of 1999, and decided to start a doll club. A very simple beginning, but it has turned into a delightful 10 years of fun, friendship, laughter and an on-going knowledge of the art of cloth doll making. To some, a cloth doll is a simple “rag” doll made of left overs, or a bright redhaired Raggedy Anne or even a Cabbage Patch Kid lookalike. But to a seamtress, several pieces of cloth can easily become an art doll.

Jean Martin, Rae Sook and Scampy Rainey started the club and spent the first few months meeting in the back room at the Quilter’s Nook shop, wondering how to ever get the word out about art dolls. Jean finally made a small poster showing pictures of cloth dolls and information about the club and hung it up by the front door of the shop for all to see. One day a visitor [Daria Cash] who had seen the sign, looked in and asked “Is this the doll club”? Well, yes it was! And so it began.

Through the years those few have turned into an active club with up to 30 members at times. Mostly local, northeastern Oklahoma, but has included members from Texas and Arkansas.

We have well-known teachers come for classes and have gone to many out of state classes. But the very first class was held in Jean’s sewing room with the original three members and two ladies from her Dallas club.....the teacher being Anne Marie Brombal. We went on to have Diane Little and Gladi Alred from Albuquerque at Jean's house, stopping on their way home from a doll conference in Kansas City. A few members attended, as well as two more ladies from Albq. and one from Florida, all on their way home. Quite a group, and the laughter never stopped. As our club grew, we had classes at the quilt shop, then the local sewing machine center, and now at the library. Our teachers have included Christine Shively, Mary Tressler, Barbara Willis, Adele Sciortino, Barbara Schoenoff, Patti Culea, Angela Jarecki, Cindee Moyer and Arley Berryhill to name a few.

But mostly we learn from each other, as our club has many talented members who are willing to share what they know. We’ve learned beading, embroidery, quilting, paper art, marionettes, polymer clay, and cloth-over face molds. Anything goes where art dolls are concerned.

Some of our local projects have included displays at the libraries, booths at the quilt shows, with the added attraction of a trunk full of the Hoffman dolls each time, also a newspaper article with pictures, exhibits at the state fair, as well as a Christmas tree decorated with many small cloth dolls and donated to one of our art museums, to be sold at their yearly Christmas tree exhibit. These have proven to be a good way to educate the public on what an art doll really is, as many people have never seen this type of doll made from cloth.

This is only a few of the many activities our club has taken part in, but it will give you an idea of how something small can turn into a wonderful, fun filled life, “playing with dolls”. ~Jean
